Did you watch the Oscars last night? How did it make you feel about your own acting career? Did watching it inspire you or depress you?
For the longest time, I couldn’t go to the movies without jumping on imdb.com when I got home, comparing myself to actors in the film.
Where did this always leave me? Feeling bad about my own success.
No matter what I had done, who I had worked with or the accolades I received for my work, it seemed there was always someone who was doing more or better and living a bigger and more fabulous life.
Then I finally realized, from my ego’s point of view…..it will always be that way!
The real question to ask yourself: Am I using another actor’s success to disconnect me from my own worth + value? If you are condemning yourself for where you are, then you are out of alignment with your own greatness.
YOU are the one who is actually pushing away your own success.
Have you noticed that when you hear about a classmate, friend or acquaintance book a job, you sometimes end up feeling frustrated + defeated, that somehow their success means you are failing?
We’ve all been there. But I am here to tell you….
But. I actually DO think it’s important to (more…)
I sincerely hope you take the time this holiday season to rest, relax + renew your mind, body + soul.
I’ve always been a do-er, and in the past, whenever there was any down time, I’d find ways to fill it by improving my home, improving my workout, or learning new ways to improve myself. Resting + relaxing often felt unproductive.
Now, I realize how giving your body a break from doing + your mind a break from trying to achieve, improve or figure things out, is exactly what your soul needs.
This time of year, I think every actor should take a break from improving themselves. As an artist, there will always be room for improvement. Better training. Better headshots. Better auditions. And when you get the job, it’s easy to get in the headspace of wanting to do a better take, have a better storyline or deliver a better overall performance.
When you give yourself permission to take a break from improving yourself, especially as an artist, you’re expressing deep self-love + acknowledging your divine perfection, right here + now.
When you take the to time rest + relax, you also end up deepening a sense of trust in your life. You may find yourself breathing deeper, feeling calmer + simply enjoying the present moment more.
In fact, napping is a perfect way to realign your energy, not only physically, but mentally, because when you slumber, all resistant thought ceases.
(I am actually proud to report, I took a 3 hour nap yesterday. Every cell in my body needed it + I felt more clarity + more joyful when I awoke.)
So, if your holiday schedule is packed, try making an appointment with yourself to do something relaxing that has nothing to do with your acting career, this business, getting ahead or improving yourself or your craft in any way.
When you make an appointment in your calendar, it will make it easier to stick to your own self-care. Or as we say around my busy home, “If it’s not scheduled, it’s not real.”
As a mom, wife, actress + business owner, I have finally learned that the more I fill myself up first, in loving ways, the more love I have to give others. And there’s nothing to improve there….except maybe taking more time to do it!
There are 2 important questions you need to ask yourself:
1)How happy are you right now? Do you know that everything you want is because you think you’ll be happier once you have it. Every role, every possession, every relationship, every award, every accolade.
2) How much fun are you having on your journey as an actor?
Many actors who are unhappy today say they’ll just be happy when they “are on a series, book the job, or make a million dollars,” yet we’ve seen so many examples of actors with tons of success who are still miserable.
Why? Because you can’t have a happy ending to an unhappy journey. You’ve got to find ways to get happy now no matter what is going on in your career or life.
Happiness is an inside job. You don’t have to wait for your circumstances to change to find joy, but instead try changing where you are focusing your attention.
“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” –Dr. Wayne Dyer
Here are 7 habits to becoming the happiest actor you know: (more…)
As a professional actor, you probably set goals + have a plan of action, but if you want to significantly change your career + life, you must make this a daily practice:
Notice how you are speaking to yourself + others daily.
It might seem like no big deal to chime in with other actors at a callback about how long you’ve all been waiting, tell yourself you’re not really right for a role or post on social media that you hate pilot season, but every thought you think + word you speak has energy.
When you watch a movie or a television show, do you ever check an actor’s IMDB credits, biography or representation, compare it to your own and end up feeling bad about yourself?
Why compare + despair?
When you spend time wishing you had someone else’s career, you are depriving yourself of the beautiful life experiences that are actually happening to you right now. Comparing takes you out of being in the present moment. The past is over, the future is unknown, so all any of us have is this moment, right now. The good news is that ALL your power is in THIS moment. Here’s how to reclaim it and feel better!
Since the month of February seems to be all about LOVE, the question I’d like us to begin to ask ourselves daily is, “What do can I do to show myself more love today?”
Besides buying yourself flowers and chocolate (I’m all for that too!), you can use this question to trigger ways to be a little kinder to yourself – mentally, spiritually, physically & emotionally. Here are 10 ways to get started.… (more…)
YOUR AFFIRMATIONS ALLOWED ME TO STEP OUT OF THE FEAR AND BE PRESENT IN THE ROOM.
