How To Retrain Your Brain for Auditions

How do you start your day when you have an audition?
Do you speak lovingly to yourself, or are you filled with worry, doubt or fear?

How you begin your day, is usually how you live your life.  Since every thought you think is creating your experience, it helps to be mindful of what you are telling yourself.  We are all using affirmations all day long, the question is, are you affirming the positive or the negative? You’ll know by the way you feel.

    Choose To Change It
If you don’t like how you feel, change your thoughts! When you start to change your way of thinking, your inner voice will always react immediately with either fear or love. But what if you used a different criteria for responding to your habitual internal dialogue? Try this:

Four Phrases To Use More Often

No matter where you perceive yourself to be or not be in your career today, I want to you to know 2 things:

    1. Everything can change very quickly.  (Maybe this week?!)
When we let ourselves off the hook about where we are “not” that’s usually when things shift in our lives + careers.
    2. Any anger, resentment or frustration you may have about your representation, other successful actors or a Casting Director not warmly welcoming you etc….is only affecting you.
When we release + let go of any anger, blame or frustration we feel towards others, we are giving ourselves the greatest gift of not letting other people take up space in the temple of our minds
When we release + let go of any anger, blame or frustration we feel towards ourselves, we experience a huge inner shift, allow our true light to shine + become more radiant to others.

Here are 4 phrases that will help you (whether you are feeling high (on life) today or feeling low) today.  Either way, saying these phrases more often will help you with your relationships with others.

Then ask yourself, “When was the last time I said these words to myself?”

    Begin today.

This Might Be Keeping You From Getting Hired…

Ever screw up an audition because you were so focused on getting the lines right?  I have.
Ever get all of the lines right, feel amazing about your performance, and not get hired?  I have.
Ever screw up some of the lines, feel like you could have done better + book the job?  I have.

Why?  Because, it’s not about the lines.  It’s not about being perfect.

And, in those moments, I wish I had today’s mantra right in front of me to remember that:

    You get hired because… (more…)

The Recipe For An Inspired Life:

    Gratitude Reciprocates

I’m writing this at 1am after watching The Oscars.  I actually had another post all ready to send out when I sat down with my husband at 10pm (after getting our kids to sleep) to finally watch our TIVO’d version of the show.  I told myself I wasn’t going to turn my computer back on.

Then I heard Matthew McConaughey’s speech.

It resonated with me so deeply that I had to write about it + urge you to watch it.  He talked about 3 things he needs every day: something to look up to, something to look forward to and someone to chase.

What struck a chord in me most was when he said, (talking about God, which I refer to often as The Universe) that “It’s a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates,” how he looks forward most to his family and that his hero is his future self, 10 years from now, someone he can look up to, but an ideal that he’s “never gonna beat.” (more…)

The Daily Shift That Could Change Your Acting Career

As a professional actor, you probably set goals + have a plan of action, but if you want to significantly change your career + life, you must make this a daily practice:

Notice how you are speaking to yourself + others daily.

It might seem like no big deal to chime in with other actors at a callback about how long you’ve all been waiting, tell yourself you’re not really right for a role or post on social media that you hate pilot season, but every thought you think + word you speak has energy.

7 Inspiring Lessons I Learned From Watching The Super Bowl

I learned 7 inspiring lessons from watching last night’s Super Bowl game that you can apply to your acting career.

For those of you who missed it: Final score: Seattle Seahawks 43. Denver Broncos 8.
Whether you care about football or not, there’s always so much to learn from watching champions + the road it took to get there.
    1) Why not you?
Growing up, Seattle Seahawk’s quarterback, Russell Wilson, heard his father tell him: “Why Not You?”  And that’s exactly what he told his team all year long.: Why not us?

    2) Believe + play like a champion every day. (more…)

What To Do When You Are Spinning Your Wheels

Do you ever find yourself running, doing + being so busy that you forget to take care of yourself?

Before I met my husband or had kids, I must confess, if I had a postcard mailing that needed to be done by a certain day, I would literally eat cookie dough for dinner + get back to work.

I had so much drive + ambition, that the idea of slowing down to take care of myself seemed counterproductive to whatever task needed to get done.  Ultimately, I was coming from a place of fear.  If I took a break or time for myself, I somehow thought my career wouldn’t thrive.

Funny enough, the more I started slowing down in my life while dating my husband, and taking better care of myself, the better my career became.  I even started getting straight offers for great roles in great projects.

So, what did that show me?

Actors: Do This Now + See A Shift.

    What if, today, you decided:

We all do it.  We allow the inner critic to take over + it often keep us from trying, leaping, asking, changing, and adventuring into the unknown.

After years of listening to my own inner critic, I now realize that it is simply my ego just trying to keep me safe. The ego likes control + is not a big fan of change. But within change is where growth + expansion reside.  And I believe we have chosen to become actors in order to grow. (more…)
