Managing Your Sanity + Trusting The Process: Navigating #Actorlife

When you’re ambitious + hard working, and things aren’t showing up exactly as you’d like, when you’d like, it can be frustrating.

Or when you’ve just finished working on a job + all of a sudden there’s a slow period, it’s easy to get caught up in wondering. “What’s next?”

Or when you audition for something, and you’re “pinned” or put on “watch + advise,” end up getting released, and you have to go back to trusting that something even better is on it’s way. (This was me a few weeks ago).

In fact, today I want to share with you what’s gone on in the last month inside my own journey navigating #actorlife + how I’ve had to practice trusting the process.

Last month, I auditioned for a recurring guest-star role on a cool drama. My audition felt great, the casting director loved it, and I thought certainly, I’d have to mark my calendar for this 4 episode arc that would shoot in Atlanta.

5 Morning Success Habits (You Can Do In Under An Hour)

I’ve been committing to a set of daily morning success habits lately that have really helped me to feel good, stay inspired and get more done in less time.

We all have the same 24 hours in a day, but since your morning habits effect your whole day, see if you can implement a new one this week.

Try it for 21 days + see how you feel.

These are my top 5, and are all designed to help you begin your day in a proactive, positive + productive way.

1. Make Your Bed. (5 minutes)

Making your bed sets the tone for your entire day. When you take a few minutes + make your bed, you are beginning the day already accomplishing something and you are also taking a mindful moment to train your brain that the little things matter + your living space is important.

Sure, it’s easy to say, “It’s just going to get unmade later,” but that’s kind of like saying , “Why wash the dishes, if they’re just going to get dirty again?”

I’ve taught me children (my youngest one still has his moments of “it’s just going to get unmade later). to take pride in their rooms and that making their bed is part of taking care of their things, starting the day off right + feeling good about what they did themselves.

When we start the day with our bed made, we can use this mindset towards completing other tasks where the same dilemma arises, and we tell ourselves, this would be “easy to do or easy to blow off.”

As Nike says, just do it.

2. Drink Something Healthy (10 minutes)

We’ve had a juicer for years that has been gathering dust, but once I started reading all about @CeleryJuiceBenefits from the Medical Medium, and saw all the ways people healed all kinds of things on his Instagram Stories, I was in.

So I dusted off the juicer + now I make 16oz of celery juice a daily habit. (it’s been 45 days so far!).

Whether you do celery juice or some lemon with water, make your morning beverage (before your coffee) something that will flush toxins from your system + hydrate you.

You’ll be amazed at how easily this will become a habit that effects the rest of your day (and the well-being of your body + mind).

3. Write In A Journal (10 minutes)

Instead of checking social media, email + looking at the twitter news feed, check in with yourself first.

This has become a habit that has helped me so much lately.

Instead of checking “out” by diving deep into my phone, I like to begin each by checking “inward” first.

The Best Weapon Against Your Challenges

I hope you’ve been enjoying July! (Whether it’s summer or winter where you live, I love connecting with actors all over the world each week).

That is the beauty of modern technology.

On a side note: I’m not sure how I missed feeling 2 earthquakes in one weekend, but I hope all of my Southern California readers are all okay.

Make sure you have shoes near your bed, flashlights and a battery powered transit radio as the very basics of your earthquake preparedness kit.  Here is a full list of items recommended by the Red Cross. 

I just learned how to turn the gas off and the water main off at our house, just in case.  Do you know how to do these things? Make sure you do.

I moved here 5 days before the Northridge Earthquake in 1994, and that one shocked me to my core. (So maybe that’s why the Universe made sure I was swinging on a swing with my kids this time around).

Whether it’s a dealing with a natural disaster or even dealing with the daily life of being an actor, I know this to be true….

No matter where you live, I hope you’ve also been taking time to pause this month, to get outside + enjoy nature, without checking your phone.

With modern technology at our fingertips all day long + requests coming at us from all angles, giving ourselves permission to pause, to take a break, as well as not check social media or email one more time, can be challenging.

Our brains inherently want to remain active + in charge, and not relinquish control.

But when we choose to pause, we not only give our brains a rest, but we are also  (more…)

Can you believe we are 5 months in to 2019?  How are things going for you?  Are you staying on track with the goals or intentions you created in January?

I’m hoping this will help reignite your fire today.

I choose a word each year that serves as the intention behind my thoughts, beliefs + actions, since I know it is our daily habits that create our success.

My word has been expansion.
 
To expand what I think is possible.

3 Steps To Getting Better Results

Ever feel like this? Exhausted, not booking, a bit lost or unsure, and maybe heading down a dark rabbit hole of negative thinking…

Even though you know better?
Even though you’re trying to stay positive?
Even though you’re trying keep the faith?

Does it seem like the more you try to do that, the more you feel like you are entering a dark tunnel without the light?

This was exactly the way one of my students admitted to feeling recently + she was actually thrilled to find out she wasn’t alone.

Not only did other actors feel this way, I told her that she basically described my February!

Yes, that’s right. I have plenty of down days too.

I had a month of great auditions + no bookings. I was definitely wondering, “where’s mine?”

I had assumed that the show I had been recurring on (Atypical on Netflix) was back in production, but I hadn’t heard anything about returning for another season.

And when things aren’t showing up the way you’d like, that dark hole can feel like it goes on forever, right?

So what do you do?

I’m all for feeling your feelings + going through them, instead of slapping a smiley face sticker over your pain.

So just know that when you are feeling down, you’re not alone. Reach out + talk to a friend. (Most likely an actor you know is feeling the same way).

Then, remind yourself that tomorrow is a new day + treat it as a blank white canvas.

When you shift your focus, it will help shift how you feel, and ultimately effect what you do.

And as you take a new action, from a better feeling place, the light in that dark tunnel will begin to appear.

My father would have been 99 this year. He was born in 1920, and passed away in 1997. I can’t believe he’s been gone over 20 years of my life.

We didn’t have iPhones back then, but we did have the old-school answering machine.

And one of his last messages to me was. “Keep going, sunshine.”

Friday was my birthday, and although, I can’t call my dad or mom and share my latest victory or have them talk to my kids, I feel them with me, deep in my heart.

I heard my father’s voice (as I often do), as I wrote this for you, the warrior. (while also doing the ugly cry)

You are among the bravest people I know, and on this birthday week, I wanted to give you a gift…

A gentle, loving, and hopefully powerful reminder to keep going.

Just as my dad told me, over 20 years ago.

Turning Your Flaws Into Gold

Happy April!  Happy Spring!  Are you ready for a new beginning?

Are you ready to really step into the spotlight in your life + your career?

What does it take to truly shine like the brightest star?

From images we see on social media or in magazines, it often looks like perfection + flawlessness.

But if we are to tell stories that reflect humanity, then flawlessness and perfection are not a true reflection of who we really are.

There are many other stories that needs to be told.

So what if stepping into the spotlight in your life + career, meant stepping up + owning your imperfections and your flaws, not waiting to be ready or perfect or flawless, but showing up + rising up in a way that lets others see the real you…now?

What if the way was through the consciousness of love, where there are no limits?

In the Japanese culture broken objects are often repaired with gold.  The flaw is seen as a unique piece of the object’s history, which adds to its beauty.

What if stepping into the spotlight meant taking all the flaws that you might try to hide (or the parts of you that may feel broken) and instead you loved them, revealed them + celebrated them?

Here is a simple message that I hope will profoundly change your day, your week + maybe even your year.

Instead of judging + criticizing yourself when you’re feeling bad, (or distracting yourself from feeling anything) what if instead, you declared…..

No matter how I am feeling today, I am choosing to love whatever arises.

This way, any emotions you might have previously labeled as negative, you might now be able to see as just another opportunity for you to acknowledge, expand and love yourself even more.

The 2 Biggest Factors That Keep You From Your Dreams

The two biggest factors that keep you from your dreams might actually surprise you.

They are…needing + wanting.

The definitions of want + need actually imply a lack of something deemed necessary, and are at the opposite energetic spectrum of feeling fulfilled + satisfied.

So, it might be time to take a closer look at what you are “needing + wanting” and ask yourself “Why does this matter so much to me?”

If you want to get somewhere in your career because you need it to define:

  • your value
  • your worth
  • your importance
  • or that you “really matter…”

Then what you want will continue to elude you.  Why?

This kind of thinking actually puts you in a state of lack – needing some outer circumstance to give you the abundance you seek.

The reality is that it actually works the other way around.
