It’s easy to book a job, shoot it + then have a quiet week in your acting career. (That was me 2 weeks ago.)
It’s also easy to let a quiet week (or 2 or 3) in your acting career get you down. But what if you added no negative meaning to any of it, and instead looked at it like this:
What else can you do when you feel like nothing is working out for you?

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr Day here in the United States, I have to share a quick story (and then I’ll reveal the 15 Habits That Will Increase Your Acting Success.)
Yesterday, Ray Charles’ Georgia On My Mind was playing on my Pandora playlist. My 6-year-old was coloring at the kitchen table and asked, “Mommy, is this Martin Luther King singing?” Fascinated by his question, I asked, “What made you wonder that, honey?” My son replied, “Well, he’s singing about the peace he finds, and that’s what Martin Luther King was all about…peace.”
It was a moment that took my breath away: My kindergartner knowing of the peace that MLK Jr. was seeking and me letting my son know this amazing leader did it all with love and not hate.
I honor Martin Luther King Jr. today as his brightly lit legacy continues to remind us all to stick with love:
Since our destiny is created by our habits, and our habits are created by our choices, it really all comes down to the habits + choices we are making in our own lives + careers daily that will effect our success in the long run.
” Many of life’s circumstances are created by three basic choices:
the disciplines you choose to keep,
the people you choose to be with,
and the laws you choose to obey.”

So, this is a great time to ask yourself 3 important questions.

My kindergartener continues to be a huge source of my inspiration, and frankly, one of my best teachers (in acting + in life). He lives every moment in the present moment + always authentically expresses how he feels.
Last night, he didn’t want to do his homework. He had to write multiple lines of upper + lowercase “S.” He declared loudly ,”I hate doing this,” and scribbled S’s on a page.
I get it. There are some things I ‘hate” doing too, yet it seems the more I choose that perspective, the longer the task seems to take and the result is rarely one I love.
The same was true for my son, even at 5 years old.
I gently responded with…”I see that you’re frustrated, but what if you think about your friend Sophia while you’re printing your “S’s. You could even tell her you’ve been working on the “S” in her name.” He smiled. He loved Sophia, he thought about her for a moment and began to draw a nearly perfect S. I was in shock + replied, “Wow, that was amazing.”
Then I asked him, “Who is in charge of your mood while you are doing homework?”
He smiled + said, “I am.” And he just got it.
I didn’t know if my suggestion would work, that part was up to him. But watching a 5 year old go from hate to love in mere seconds and seeing his handwriting change accordingly confirmed what I know to be true…
I’ve run into many actors over the years who have said things like “I hate auditioning, I hate going to callbacks, I hate driving all over town, I hate this business.”
I’m not sure if any of them were consciously aware that bringing all this “hate” energy into their work, was not helping them get results they loved. They usually used their lackluster outcome to fuel their mood, instead of knowing it actually works the other way around. It’s so easy to blame auditions, traffic or a seemingly rude casting director when you don’t book the job, but the reality is you have the ability to transform it all. Once you see that you can choose a new perspective, you regain your power. (more…)
I’ve been stepping out of my comfort zone a lot lately, and it has been nothing short of scary and exciting all at the same time,
I’m in the midst of working on a new project that involves revisiting writing I’ve done for the last 10 years and mining out the gold, pain, heart + soul of my life. It’s brought up a lot of emotions for me and would be so easy to tell myself all of the reasons I shouldn’t keep going.
But when you know you are on a path of growth + expansion as an artist, stepping out of your comfort zone is really where the good stuff is revealed.
In fact…
It’s funny how sometimes, the exact growth you are seeking can show up first as fear and easily convince you to stop you from moving forward. Our job as artists, is really, to (more…)
Haven’t you noticed with some people, success just seems to find them…over and over?
Things align for them. Success comes easily.
What is their secret? Connections, training, looks?
None of the above.
If you interviewed 100 successful people in our business, the common denominating factor in their success would be their…consistent state of mind.
More often than not, they don’t get stuck in a state of struggle, but find reasons to feel good now, matter what obstacles they may be facing. They make feeling good #1 on their To Do List.
From the outside, it may seem as if they are often “in the flow” .Which also means they don’t allow setbacks or rejection to destroy them. They also “go with the flow” more easily not allowing fear to stop them.
By postponing your happiness, you are actually disallowing the things you want to FLOW into your life! Look for reasons to feel good now every day + watch what shifts in your life + career.
You might hear most actors say…“I will feel so good when…”
Do you know how powerful you are? Really? Do you know that whatever you can conceive as true, you can bring into being?
But here’s the catch: You don’t get what you want. you get what you believe, or as Wayne Dyer simply states, “When you believe it, you will see it.”
So, if you’ve been taking lots of action to achieve your goals + not getting the results you desire, odds are, at a deep subconscious level, what you believe to be true about yourself + your dreams being realized needs to shift. When your beliefs change, so do your actions + ultimately so do your results.
“Your mental visualization will be accepted by your subconscious mind. If you dwell on obstacles, delays + difficulties, your subconscious mind responds accordingly, and you block your own good.”
~ Joseph Murphy (The Power of the Subconscious Mind)
