I used to think that if I stopped striving, doing + pushing myself to achieve my goals, they would never happen.
It didn’t matter how exhausted I would feel, I believed that taking a break was for the lazy or the unambitious.
Unfortunately, not only was I pinching myself off from my own power through “doing” when I was emotionally + physically depleted, I would often wonder if I was doing enough? A vicious cycle for sure.
Even though it seemed counterintuitive for my type-A personality, once I understood that my true power could be found in relaxing + letting go – auditions, offers, + relationships started coming to me much more easily + without nearly as much effort.
Now, I realize that relaxing + letting go need to be part of my (more…)
Did you watch the Oscars last night? How did it make you feel about your own acting career? Did watching it inspire you or depress you?
For the longest time, I couldn’t go to the movies without jumping on imdb.com when I got home, comparing myself to actors in the film.
Where did this always leave me? Feeling bad about my own success.
No matter what I had done, who I had worked with or the accolades I received for my work, it seemed there was always someone who was doing more or better and living a bigger and more fabulous life.
Then I finally realized, from my ego’s point of view…..it will always be that way!
The real question to ask yourself: Am I using another actor’s success to disconnect me from my own worth + value? If you are condemning yourself for where you are, then you are out of alignment with your own greatness.
YOU are the one who is actually pushing away your own success.
Have you noticed that when you hear about a classmate, friend or acquaintance book a job, you sometimes end up feeling frustrated + defeated, that somehow their success means you are failing?
We’ve all been there. But I am here to tell you….
But. I actually DO think it’s important to (more…)
I walked my kindergartener to school. Took my 3 year-old to my awesome workout: The Dailey Method. Showered + blew my hair dry (a rarity) Played with my 3 year-old in our backyard + ate hunch together. Took him to his little gym class where I now have to stay “outside the glass” to watch him. (We used to do mommy + me, but those days pass fast!). Had the baby-sitter come (who would be picking up my kindergartner since my husband was on an overnite surf trip.)
Did a quick VO job from my home studio. Drove to Raliegh Studios for a fitting for a great role I booked on Castle. Had time to write in my trailer while waiting for a photoshoot for this character. Got home by 9 p.m. to a quiet house, where my kids were happily sound asleep.
Although I usually love putting them to bed, since I had spent quality time this morning with them, I didn’t feel an ounce of mom guilt.
I’ve learned that I can have it all, but I just can’t do it all. I have to have to allow + ask for help.
I also realized, that this was such a perfect day because:
Your world is a mirror reflecting back to you your own inner state. When you are in a state of turmoil + struggle, then you will see a tumultuous world full of struggle. When you are in a state of inner joy, you will experience a seemingly joyful world full of possibility.
The tone of your experience is always preset by you, since what you see on the outside, is simply a reflection of your inner state of consciousness.
How does this affect your acting career?
You will spend most of your life as an actor, not getting the role. It is how you handle + internalize NOT getting the part that will determine your success. How will you let rejection affect your state of mind?
You can either use each audition as a chance to create a compelling character, play in the room, leave + let it go. Or you can use each audition as a chance to beat yourself up for not being good enough, when you don’t get the part.
When you don’t book the job, it’s easy to go back + replay your audition in your mind, telling yourself…
“I should have said this line differently. I should have worn blue. I should have taken more time with it. I shouldn’t have taken so much time with it. I should have stood for that scene. I should have sat for that scene. I should have been different, better, prettier, younger, older, wiser, and on and on and on….”
When you play the game of “If I only did this audition in a different way than how I chose to do it”, you are telling yourself + the Universe…”I am the problem. I need to fix something. I am not enough.”
It’s one thing to learn from an audition experience + walk away realizing, “I could have listened more, been more present or have connected more,” but if you did your work + just didn’t get the job, instead of beating yourself up, making it all about you + what you didn’t do or say or be…
Try this mantra….
Since our lives become a mirror of our inner state of being, I have a feeling this mantra must have been very present in the internal mindset of the following actors who didn’t get the part, but didn’t let it ruin them. They all went on to have huge careers.
Here are 10 successful actors who did not get the role, but also, didn’t dwell on it.(more…)
No matter how high you climb in your acting career…there will always be someone further along.
So often actors tend to compare “up” to others who have more success which only makes them feel “less than.”
This is your ego’s way of keeping your competitive mind active.
But when you shift from the mind that compares to the mind that creates, you will shift how you feel about yourself, as well as the abundance that shows up for you.
You are a divine being having a human experience. When you spend your time wishing you were further along, had more credits, were prettier, younger or whatever other thought your inner critic distracts you with, you actually cut off your own creativity in this moment. You deplete all of your power.
It would seem as if “the industry” is doing it, but it is actually coming from your own projection of thought from your competitive mind that believes the supply of roles + opportunities is somehow limited.
When you can literally state “I accept myself. I accept my life + my career exactly as they are right now,” + mean it, you raise your self-worth and you begin to realize, there really is no competition.
Then you give yourself the gift of accepting this moment exactly as it is, or another way to explain (more…)
Do you know how powerful you are? Really? Do you know that whatever you can conceive as true, you can bring into being?
But here’s the catch:You don’t get what you want. you get what you believe, or as Wayne Dyer simply states, “When you believe it, you will see it.”
So, if you’ve been taking lots of action to achieve your goals + not getting the results you desire, odds are, at a deep subconscious level, what you believe to be true about yourself + your dreams being realized needs to shift. When your beliefs change, so do your actions + ultimately so do your results.
“Your mental visualization will be accepted by your subconscious mind. If you dwell on obstacles, delays + difficulties, your subconscious mind responds accordingly, and you block your own good.” ~ Joseph Murphy (The Power of the Subconscious Mind)
So the next time you feel frustrated that what you want is taking too long to get here, remember this:
What if today, you could know, for certain, the following to be true:
You can know this for certain, simply by choosing to own the feeling. Once you do, you are allowing these 6 little words to change how you feel, shift your mindset + ultimately alter what comes your way.
Owning these 6 little words will certainly bring a sense of confidence + a relaxed easiness into your auditions, your callbacks, and your meetings. And who doesn’t want to work with that actor?
You don’t need to wait to book the right job to feel this way, you can choose it now, in this very moment.
You create your reality through your dominant thoughts. (more…)
I’ve been there. I’ve auditioned for roles that have gone to someone younger, to someone older, to a more well-known actor, to an actor you’ve never heard of, to a blonde, to a brunette, to a guy, to another ethnicity, you name it, I’ve experienced it. I’ve been released from “avails” + have seen lucrative campaigns come to an end.
Yes, an acting career is like a marathon-length rollercoaster ride.
The key is that every single time I’ve used what other actors might deem as a setback or a failure, to fuel me.
Ultimately, I’ve used each experience (after the initial shock is over!) to deepen my trust in my own future, to believe that good always finds me, to lift myself up + to keep going. (Some days are easier than others, of course.)
But when I do this, things have always surprised me in the most miraculous ways and none of it was what I would have planned.
Ultimately, you have to….
Of course the work of doing this is an inside job. This internal work is part of your work as an actor. The ability to do this is what will get you to where you want to go.
So, now that we are 6 months into the year and you may have experienced some surprises + some “setbacks”, dig deeper than ever before and really …. (more…)
No matter where you perceive yourself to be or not be in your career today, I want to you to know 2 things:
Everything can change very quickly. (Maybe this week?!)
When we let ourselves off the hook about where we are “not” that’s usually when things shift in our lives + careers.
Any anger, resentment or frustration you may have about your representation, other successful actors or a Casting Director not warmly welcoming you etc….is only affecting you.
When we release + let go of any anger, blame or frustration we feel towards others, we are giving ourselves the greatest gift of not letting anyone take up space in the temple of our minds
When we release + let go of any anger, blame or frustration we feel towards ourselves, we experience a huge inner shift, allow our true light to shine + become more radiant to others.
Here are 4 phrases that will help you (whether you are feeling high (on life) today or feeling low) today. Either way, saying these phrases more often will help you with your relationships with others.
Then ask yourself, “When was the last time I said these words to myself?”
YOUR CREATION IS...VERY POWERFUL, IT CALMED ME, PREPARED ME & FOCUSED ME + I BOOKED JOBS.
"Since I began using your guided meditations I have now, in only a few months, booked up an entire year of work. Your creation is truly a blessing + very powerful. Before every audition I have done recently I have listened to at least 3 of your tracks and it has calmed me, prepared me and focused me."
SINCE LISTENING TO YOUR GUIDED MEDITATIONS, I BOOKED 2 FEATURE FILMS
"I bought Creating Powerful Auditions and I listen to it every morning. "Empowering Myself" is my absolute favorite meditation, sometimes I put it on repeat until I fully and truly feel every declaration. Since I've been listening to your guided meditations I booked my first feature film + also recently booked the lead role in my first horror film. Thank you for coming into my life!”
I BOOKED TWO ACTING GIGS IN THE SAME WEEK BECAUSE I HAD HER CD ON REPEAT!
"I listen to Wendy's guided meditations pretty much every chance I get. I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have her amazing voice in my ear keeping me empowered, inspired + in the right mental space to persevere day in and day out. I booked two acting gigs in the same week because I had Wendy's Creating Powerful Auditions album on repeat. Thank you WENDY for your positivity + light!"
I BOOKED THE JOB! LISTENING TO CREATING POWERFUL AUDITIONS MADE A DIFFERENCE!
"Been listening to your "Creating Powerful Auditions" mp3 daily since purchasing about a week ago. Listened to it on the way to an audition...took a few moments before leaving my car to do the visualizations. I walked into the audition room feeling totally empowered, feeling light. I booked the job. I feel your album made a difference. Thank you, Wendy."
YOUR AFFIRMATIONS ALLOWED ME TO STEP OUT OF THE FEAR AND BE PRESENT IN THE ROOM.
"I just returned from an audition after listening to your guided meditations. Your affirmations allowed me to step out of the fear and be present in the room. As I waited for my audition I envisioned the session being successful and feeling empowered afterward. And it was and I did."
I'VE TURNED A SLOW STREAK INTO A BOOKING STREAK AND I FEEL REALLY EMPOWERED.
"Wendy is so generous with her knowledge and understanding of the deeper, inside work that goes into living a healthy, happy, well balanced actor life. Her daily inspirations mean so much to me...and I'm grateful for the custom guided meditation she wrote for me. I've turned a slow streak into a booking streak & I feel really empowered."
