Ever feel like this? Exhausted, not booking, a bit lost or unsure, and maybe heading down a dark rabbit hole of negative thinking…
Even though you know better?
Even though you’re trying to stay positive?
Even though you’re trying keep the faith?
Does it seem like the more you try to do that, the more you feel like you are entering a dark tunnel without the light?
This was exactly the way one of my students admitted to feeling recently + she was actually thrilled to find out she wasn’t alone.
Not only did other actors feel this way, I told her that she basically described my February!
Yes, that’s right. I have plenty of down days too.
I had a month of great auditions + no bookings. I was definitely wondering, “where’s mine?”
I had assumed that the show I had been recurring on (Atypical on Netflix) was back in production, but I hadn’t heard anything about returning for another season.
And when things aren’t showing up the way you’d like, that dark hole can feel like it goes on forever, right?
So what do you do?
I’m all for feeling your feelings + going through them, instead of slapping a smiley face sticker over your pain.
So just know that when you are feeling down, you’re not alone. Reach out + talk to a friend. (Most likely an actor you know is feeling the same way).
Then, remind yourself that tomorrow is a new day + treat it as a blank white canvas.
When you shift your focus, it will help shift how you feel, and ultimately effect what you do.
And as you take a new action, from a better feeling place, the light in that dark tunnel will begin to appear.
This is exactly what I did. In fact, I created a new guided meditation audio to help me shift my focus + how it made me feel.
I wanted to feel like I Am Stepping Into The Spotlight in a bigger way, no matter what was or wasn’t showing up.
That shift in my focus, helped me to feel better.
Then I got busy taking action.
I started connecting in a positive way with executive producers I had worked with (on social media), took new headshots, and kept returning to my guided meditation practice with this new audio to guide me to a better feeling place.
Two weeks later…
I got asked back for a 3rd Season of Atypical. Little did I know that their production had just started a bit later this year. Oh, how I wish I could get those days I spent in a dark rabbit hole back. (And trust me, there was no Easter Bunny in sight).
And another show I had auditioned for (and heard nothing about…)
One month later, I got a call and they offered me a role in a completely different episode. I had worked with the Executive Producers before. (The same execs I was engaging with on social media, just for the fun of staying connected.)
And, as luck would have it, that job ended up working in between episodes of Atypical! What?
So, before I head back to the set tomorrow to enjoy shooting another episode on the 3rd season of Atypical, I thought I’d share this story with you.
Because it all begin with me shifting my focus to what I could control (and how it made me feel).
And since research shows that the fastest way to shift how you feel is through guided meditation + visualization, that is always my go-to-method for quick results.
So, where do you begin this week? Treat today as a brand new day, a blank white canvas and then…
Here are 3 Steps For Getting Better Results:
1) Shift where you choose to focus.
2) Shift how you choose to feel.
3) Shift what you choose to do.
Notice what is working in your life, give thanks for what you already have, see yourself stepping into the spotlight + feel ready for a big shift this week.
Then go take action from this newly aligned place. Don’t do it to try and create a result. Do it because it genuinely feels good.
This trifecta of focusing better, feeling better + doing things differently are all in your control.
